Gabrielle from Porto Alegre, Brazil
I’ve always enjoyed volunteering, but due to the high demands of college and dividing myself between my hometown and where I currently live, I couldn’t commit myself with any organization. With a sponsorship from Random Acts, IMAlive allowed me to start my desire to help others.
In Brazil, mental health and suicide are subjects that are typically not discussed without preconceptions and judgements. The suicide rates just keep growing and we need to start talking about it. Feeling that, somehow, I am part of a movement that seeks change in those stigmas is something really important to me.
I’ve recently graduated, so I can now say that I’m a civil engineer. Even though I spent the last quarter of my life with calculus and physics, I plan on studying gastronomy – or psychology (I’m indecisive!) – sometime in the future! Most people close to me would tell you that I’m a good cook and I’d argue with that and tell you I’m a baker! But what most people don’t know about me is that I have a passion for singing and I’m pretty decent at it.
“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.
And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.”
– Albert Camus
