Inside The Life of an IMAlive Volunteer

Katy from Minnesota

Being an IMAlive volunteer is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  Knowing that what we do helps to keep people safe is both powerful and humbling.  Once we connect with the person in crisis, it’s inspiring what they can do to keep themselves safe and start feeling better. Sometimes, it’s as if they are uncovering their own superpowers and that is amazing!

When I’m not volunteering with IMAlive, I can be found with my super-awesome family enjoying everything life has to offer, traveling the globe to work at pop culture conventions, or working my day job in Minneapolis or Chicago as an IT Project Manager.

I’m inspired every day by my teenage daughter who has become quite the human rights activist. My husband who helps to protect people as an amazing insurance agent. My mom and dad who have shown me how to properly plan for my future. My sisters who share a love that only grows out of a common upbringing, and my fraternity brothers and my powerful tribe of women who prove that family doesn’t end with blood.  I had their loving support during some of the most difficult times in my life, so it is important to me to give back to others what was so generously given to me.

If I can be a bit of light during someone’s darkest moments, I believe I have done my job as an IMAlive volunteer.

“Be who you are without hesitation.”
