Inside the Life of an Volunteer

Rebeca from San Luis, AZ, USA

“My mission in life is not to merely survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”  – Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou put it so eloquently and had me asking the question “why do I volunteer?” I guess it all sums up to wanting to help someone that is in need of someone being there for them. I deal with anxiety and I have had those moments when you need someone to listen and be present. I want to be that someone and be there. So, I found IMAlive through Random Acts, and luckily, I was sponsored so here I am.

A little more background, it all started because I started watching Supernatural and became a fan of the show, which I ended up loving, and well, the rest is history- it brought me here. A couple of more things about me: I recently graduated with a Bachelor’s in Psychology, something I constantly enjoy learning about and ties in with my love of reading and learning new things, I also love playing the guitar and cooking. All of these things are my “therapy”. Many have said how cooking helps me be calm while I just say it clears my head, all I’m thinking about  is what to add next. It easily translates into real life too and helps me in general when I feel anxious. Just stopping to think about what to “add next” helps me take a deep breath and calms me.
