Inside the Life of a Volunteer

Kelsey from Czech Republic

Hi, my name is Kelsey. I am from California and currently living in Prague, Czech Republic.

I am an artist and love painting, sculpture, and making paper art (usually of my favorite animal which is a pigeon!)

As a survivor of rape, I have experienced PTSD, anxiety, and depression and know how isolating it can be when you are going through a difficult time and don’t feel comfortable reaching out to the people around you. Before becoming a volunteer myself, I reached out to IMAlive and was very thankful for the help I received when I was in crisis. The continuous process of healing from my own trauma has made me passionate about helping people going through difficult times know that they are not alone and that there are good people in the world that care deeply about their well being and safety. I always look forward to my shifts and feel very honored to be the person that someone trusts to open up to when they need someone to help.

One of my favorite affirmations is: “Because of what happened, I am making different choices and that’s okay.” To me, this means that a difficult event or situation may change you and it’s okay to adapt to this change rather than compare your present to the past.
